An entrepreneur with a green thumb, Marcus Malouf started his grassroots business at the age of 19 with only a pickup truck and a lawnmower. MC Landscaping LLC, now celebrating its 10th year in operation, blossomed from there.

“Being able to serve the community, our employees and our planet by designing, installing and maintaining beautiful and purposeful landscaping doesn’t feel like work at all,” said Malouf, who studied horticulture at Long Beach City College.

His company specializes in providing clients with innovative landscaping solutions for our ever-changing environment, including drought-tolerant gardens. The business, which has a two-acre supply yard and showroom in Lakewood — where clients can smell the flowers, pick up stones, test out sprinklers and lights, and cozy up next to fire pits and barbeques — includes an experienced team of landscape designers, project and maintenance managers, and a fleet of landscaping crews.

MC Landscaping transforms water-guzzling, bare or neglected yards into sustainable urban oases. Malouf said one of the most popular services the company provides is FREE ESTIMATES for lawn to drought-tolerant garden transformations, while also providing guidance to homeowners looking to take advantage of cash-incentive programs for reducing water usage.

“Long Beach’s Lawn-to-Garden rebate program is a huge tool to get homeowners big rebates on replacing their thirsty lawn with a low-water landscape that will thrive and protect our natural resources,” he said, noting that MC Landscaping helps customers through every step of the incentive Water Department program’s approval process.

In 2021 alone, Malouf said his clients collected a total of more than $150,000 in rebates from the city. Those customers qualified for additional reimbursements because MC Landscaping is a program-accredited landscape designer. Drought-tolerant landscaping also lowers water bills and pays off in moral dividends since it helps conserve a valuable natural resource.

“Water restrictions seem to go into effect every summer here, and a lawn will not thrive with the restrictions put in place,” he said. “Having a drought tolerant landscape ensures your curb appeal to remain high throughout the whole year.”

Beyond the water savings and curb appeal, Malouf emphasizes how important it is for cities and neighbors to maintain beautiful green spaces for overall wellbeing. “Communities with more and nicer landscaping are proven to have a higher quality of life,” he said.
