The MemorialCare Breast Center at Long Beach Medical Center is committed to the early detection, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. The Breast Center offers a variety of cutting-edge technologies to improve patient outcomes.

Tomosynthesis (3D Mammography) Most mammograms done at Long Beach Medical Center are done using Tomosynthesis. Tomosynthesis uses a low-dose X-ray and specialized computer software to create a 3D image of the breast. Research has shown that tomosynthesis not only increases detection rates of breast cancer, but also reduces the need to recall people for additional testing compared to conventional 2D mammography.

SaviScout® System One of the most common breast operations is a lumpectomy. Wires are typically placed in the breast prior to surgery to very precisely guide surgeons to the cancer. The wire is removed at the time of surgery along with the cancer.

SaviScout® is a small chip that uses radar, rather than wire, to aid surgeons in targeting cancerous tissue. The benefits of SaviScout® include no wires placed in the breast, more convenient process with less waiting around on the day of surgery, and 3D guidance for precise removal of the tumor.

Oncoplastic Breast Cancer Surgery Oncoplastic breast surgery uses plastic surgery techniques to remove breast cancers. This type of approach allows us to reshape the breast to achieve a rounder, more youthful appearing breast, while removing the cancer at the same time.

Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (IORT) Intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) integrates a lumpectomy and radiation treatment into a single outpatient hospital visit. During IORT, single dose of radiation is delivered to the lumpectomy site after the cancer is removed.

This replaces six weeks of daily radiation, reduces the total radiation dose to the body, and allows patients to return to their normal life sooner.

AlignRT®AlignRT® is a state-of-the-art radiation system that uses 3D imaging of the patient’s body to provide accuracy and precision during radiation treatment. AlignRT® continuously monitors the patient’s body in order to only radiate the tissue that needs treatment and protect the vital organs from getting any of the radiation dose.

Quality Care The MemorialCare Breast Center is accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers(NAPBC) and American College of Radiology (ACR), which means patients are receiving the highest quality comprehensive breast care provided by a dedicated multi-disciplinary team.
