In 2012, entrepreneurs Kara Connell and Kelly Bockrath introduced the first sugaring and skincare boutique concept to Long Beach. In an effort to create a space where women felt accepted, supported, and safe, Kara and Kelly opened Bronzed Sugar, a female-owned and -operated beauty studio that specializes in sugaring, airbrush tanning, and skincare.
Today, Bronzed Sugar has grown into a multi-city brand, with four locations across Southern California having served thousands of clients. Its latest announcement? A new name: Sugar Cove.
“As our business grew, we knew that we wanted our store’s identity to grow with it,” says Kara. “We wanted to provide our customers with an elevated experience that is as fresh as the treatments we provide, and to stay relevant, beautiful, and on trend.” Despite the rebranding, Kara and Kelly assure customers that their quality of services will remain best in class. “With the new name comes new store interiors, new products, and a fresh look, but our core business model and what we do is the same,” says Kelly. “We will never compromise our quality, if anything, it has only improved as we’ve grown.”
Sugar Cove specializes in its namesake: sugaring. As an all-natural body hair removal method, sugaring has rapidly increased in popularity in recent months. Although similar to waxing in that a paste is applied to the skin and ripped off, sugaring is a different, and perhaps superior, hair removal method due to pain level, ingredients, and result.
“The sugaring solution is made with just lemon, sugar and water,” says Kelly. “Each client gets their own solution, since the paste creates a ball of sugar that is used once and then thrown out, making it completely hygienic. Our highly trained Sugar Mamas apply the mixture to the skin, and remove the hair in the same direction as hair growth, meaning less pain, less redness, and less chance of ingrown hairs or irritation.”
The newly renovated Sugar Cove stores are now open in all four locations in both Long Beach and Redondo Beach.
