U.S. News & World Report, the global authority in hospital rankings and consumer advice, has ranked MemorialCare Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach among the top children’s hospitals in Pediatric Pulmonology & Lung Surgery in the recently published 2020-21 Best Children’s Hospitals rankings.
The 14th annual Best Children’s Hospitals rankings recognize the top pediatric centers across the U.S. in a variety of pediatric specialties. In 2020, only 88 children’s hospitals were ranked in at least one of the 10 pediatric specialties that were evaluated.
Miller Children’s & Women’s is among 50 pediatric centers in the nation ranked for care of serious respiratory problems in children. Successful management of diseases such as asthma, cystic fibrosis and neuromuscular weakness disorders were recognized during the ranking process.

This national ranking comes on the heels of Miller Children’s & Women’s recent recognition for excellence in pediatric asthma care from The Joint Commission. Miller Children’s & Women’s remains the only free-standing children’s hospital in California, and only one of 13 hospitals in the nation, to receive the Disease Specific Certification in Pediatric Asthma from The Joint Commission.
U.S. News introduced the Best Children’s Hospitals rankings in 2007 to help families of children with rare or life-threatening illnesses find the best medical care available. The rankings are the most comprehensive source of quality-related information on U.S. pediatric hospitals.

To create the pediatric rankings, U.S. News gathers key clinical data from nearly 200 medical centers through a detailed survey that looks at measures such as patient safety, infection prevention and adequacy of nurse staffing. In addition, part of each hospital’s score is derived from surveys of more than 15,000 pediatric specialists who are asked where they would send the sickest children in their specialty.
