The Josephine S. Gumbiner Foundation awarded a $15,000 grant last week to Su Casa—a nonprofit organization which provides domestic violence shelter and services based in Long Beach and available to Southern California residents.
The nonprofit has provided domestic violence crisis and prevention services for Long Beach and other surrounding communities for 39 years.
Su Casa was founded by domestic violence victim Petra Medelez. Her vision was to fill her community with peaceful homes and Su Casa remains dedicated to Medelez’ belief that every individual has the right to live free from violence.
Su Casa estimates that it will receive over 3,600 requests for services during the upcoming year including crisis hotline calls, requests for emergency shelter or counseling.
According to Executive Director Annie Conti, the grants the organization receives are directed toward specific programs. This grant may be utilized for their core operating services which could include providing targeted training for shelter staff or capital improvements to their shelters.
