The Aquarium of the Pacific will host its seventh Urban Ocean Festival on Saturday April 30 and Sunday May 1, featuring the Trashin’ Fashion show, boat cruises, art, games, mural painting, poetry, live music, sustainable seafood cooking demos by Premier, and other ocean-inspired activities.
Developed by Aquarium President and CEO Jerry Schubel, the festival celebrates Southern California’s urban coast and ocean, where human activity and wildlife coexist. The family-friendly experience uses art and fashion, music and food and more to help attendees build their own connections to Long Beach’s particular coastal community, where several species of whales call our local waters home.
“The Urban Ocean Festival spotlights our relationship with the ocean and coast – Californians prize our beaches and ocean, and this relationship is a main component of our local culture and represents our ethic for caring about natural places and our local environment,” said Claire Atkinson, senior manager of Communications at the aquarium. “Through this festival weekend, the Aquarium hopes to further engage the local community with cultivating a sustainable relationship with our unique coastline.”
Highlights of the festival will include The Trashin’ Fashion Show, winning art from the Urban Ocean Art Show displayed and a screening of Urban Ocean, a show about aquaculture developed in 2013 that plays in the aquarium’s Ocean Science Center on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Science on a Sphere.
Also on the docket are a variety of special boat programs during the festival and the summer at an additional cost. The Urban Ocean: World Port and Sea Life Cruise occurs monthly beginning in May and lasting through September (at 4:00PM on June 4, July 9, August 13, and September 3) aboard Harbor Breeze Cruises. The Port of Long Beach will also host a tour of the port aboard Harbor Breeze Cruises on Saturday, April 30 and The Poetry Ocean Cruise is scheduled for Saturday, April 30, at 3:00PM.
