Kitty Hall, sponsored by the mayor’s office, saw 39 cats and kittens go home with new families. This is great—thanks to Mayor Robert Garcia and his staff, Long Beach Animal Care Services (ACS) and their staff, and to the many dedicated, loving Rescue Partners, pictured here.

Kitten season’s still with us and the shelters and rescues are not by any means empty, but dogs need some press, too. Here are a few.

Foster needed

Foster needed immediately for the little dark-brown terrier mix. Can you help?

Live Love Pet Care & Animal Rescue was contacted about an abandoned terrier mix who will be euthanized at the end of today, Friday, July 15, at City of Long Beach Animal Care Services (ACS) if a foster isn’t immediately found. Live Love was promised financial support to back him from the good Samaritan who found him, but he needs a foster home where he can decompress and get ready for a forever home. Please see the message below for more information. The dog is about two years old, and was abandoned with another dog at a home on 5th Street and Rose Avenue during a heat wave. According to the rescuer, “someone must have opened a vent screen, tossed them in, and then screwed the vent shut. Who would do something like this? It was during the heat waved we experienced around that time.”

A worker pulled both of them out. SpcaLA next door to ACS evaluated both, and the little and the little white female was taken in. However, the little boy was nervous in the new surroundings at the shelter and snapped at the vet. The shelter is limited in space and will have to put him down if a foster isn’t found.

His rescuer said that he’d played with him in the shaded yard they transferred them to, and he was responsive and friendly, but when the owner wasn’t located, they had to take both to the shelter. “He survived the hot entrapment from under the vacant house,” the rescuer said. “I hope he can be paired up with a foster that can give him a little time to decompress.”

This is urgent. If you or someone you know is interested, email [email protected]. The little guy’s kennel info is as follows: Kennel No K610, ID# A574133.

Artemis

Them ears! Artemis, aka Artie, is a three-year-old, five-pound Chihuahua. He was found as a stray but is adjusting well to rescue life and has quickly begun to bond with his foster family. Artie would thrive in a home with other small dogs or as an only dog. He is good with older children but is fearful of cats. Artie is currently learning leash manners and basic commands and would love to be adopted by a family who would continue to work with him! Neutered, and current on vaccinations; house training in progress. For an interview with Artie, contact Live Love Animal Rescue at [email protected].

Saturday, August 13, 8:00AM–10:00AM, Gum Grove Nature Park, Crestview Avenue and Avalon Drive, Seal Beach

Free event

Butterflies may not be pets and the birds you’ll encounter on this lovely outing likely won’t ride around on your shoulder, but they are animals, and this is an exercise in appreciation. We meet in the parking lot near Avalon Drive and Catalina and walk toward this long, narrow park overlooking the Los Cerritos Wetlands to enjoy songs of summer. We will be looking for house wrens, song sparrows, black phoebes, swallows and raptors. We can see the bike path along the San Gabriel River and on clear days the local mountains, Palos Verdes and the downtown Long Beach skyline. Hat, sunscreen, water and binoculars are advised, and be forewarned that there are no restrooms on the site.
