The Aquarium of the Pacific will host the National Oceanic And Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Day on Saturday, November 14 from 9:00AM to 5:00PM, where experts will speak on, most notably, the predicted impacts of this year’s El Niño.
Special talks presented by NOAA experts, remotely operated vehicle (ROV) demonstrations, a teacher workshop, a NOAA art contest exhibition, educational games and short videos will be featured during NOAA Day. The event gives the agency an opportunity to inform the public about ocean habitat conservation, weather warnings, safe and sustainable seafood, ocean exploration and many more topics pertaining to oceanic matters, according to the release.
“We hope visitors to NOAA Day at the Aquarium of the Pacific will learn how our everyday lives are interconnected with our oceans and atmosphere,” said Irma Lagomarsino, branch chief of NOAA Partnerships, Communications and External Affairs. “The oceans impact our climate; provide us with food and a place for recreation; and are a large part of our economy. We all have a role in keeping the ocean ecosystem healthy. NOAA helps us better understand the dynamic processes of our oceans and atmosphere.”
In addition, NOAA National Weather Service representatives will utilize the aquarium’s state-of-the-art technology NOAA Science on a Sphere (SOS), located in the Ocean Science Center, to demonstrate weather and climate in near-real-time using satellite data and prediction models while discussing this year’s El Niño impact.
“It is a unique way to demonstrate complex environmental processes like this year’s El Niño event, that is both captivating and instructive,” said Lagomarsino about the NOAA SOS.
She added that at this NOAA Day, the administration is especially excited to highlight the connection between humans and the environment in an effort to inspire future scientists and policy leaders. Lagomarsino wants attendees to take away the knowledge that NOAA has a wealth of knowledge to offer our understanding of our current and changing world.
