stateoftheartsThe Arts Council for Long Beach’s annual State of the Arts event will be hosted in partnership with the Office of Mayor Robert Garcia for the first time and, to add another first, will be held at the Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA), one of Long Beach’s outstanding cultural institutions.

“Mayor Garcia’s support helps elevate the arts throughout the city and beyond,” Arts Council President Marco Schindelmann said in a statement. “We are very grateful that he understands how incredibly important the arts are to our diverse communities.”

The State of the Arts will take place on Friday, October 9 from 8:30AM to 10:00AM inside MOLAA’s sculpture garden, where the arts council will unveil a new project, alongside a new grant and partnership.

The purpose of the occasion is to recognize the extraordinary work and commitment of five individuals and organizations making the city a great place to live, work and create. Award categories include: James H. Ackerman Arts Philanthropist, Arts Educator and Arts Volunteer; and two new awards this year – Arts Innovator and Economic Development Arts Trailblazer. Mayor Garcia will announce the Arts Council’s winners and present the awards at the event.

“The arts not only make our communities culturally richer, they are also instrumental to education, economic development and innovation,” Garcia said in a statement. “You can’t have a successful city without a successful arts sector.”

Also on the docket, the Arts Innovator award and Mayor’s Office partnership caught the attention of the countywide Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation, which is featuring the event as part of LA Innovation Week, a countywide celebration of innovation and creativity.

The admission-free event will have live music by Long Beach’s own Jazz Angels and a continental breakfast to precede the ceremony. Please RSVP to [email protected].

MOLAA is located at 628 Alamitos Avenue.
