It’s only fitting that a university with one of the largest student bodies in the CSU system is set to host a tournament featuring some of the largest bodies…in the international sphere of sports. The 2015 US Sumo Open is the largest annual sumo tournament outside of Japan, according to the website and the Walter Pyramid at California State University, Long Beach is ready to host over 100 live Sumo wrestling matches starting at 1:00PM. Whether or not you self-identify as a bonafide pizza lover, the prospect of winning free pizza for an entire year is enticing. At the least, if you win you can show your date a good (and less expensive) time at Flippin’ Pizza, set to have their official ribbon-cutting ceremony and grand opening on Saturday from 11:00AM to 2:00PM. Support the owners, two Long Beach natives and graduates of Long Beach Poly high, in their endeavor to bring New York-style pizza to the West Coast.
Spend some quality time with two of the friendliest bicycling advocates in Long Beach, Kellie and Dave Morris as they teach you basic and/or advanced cycling skills for getting around town on your two-wheeled steel steed like a pro for free. Head on over to Retro Row’s The Social List for a night of 4th Street culture, fun and good eats as local artist Hely Omar Gonzalez shows off his latest series of works, entitled Cosmic Abstractions.
Break out the blankets, beach chairs and picnic baskets because Long Beach Cinematheque will be teaming up with RIOTstage to put on a unique, celebratory performance before the screening of the cult classic Xanadu. Honoring the roller skates, disco outfits and feel-good songs of the “so bad, it’s good” neon era of the ‘70s and ‘80s, the local collective of musicians will break out their best sounds to pay tribute to the British rock group Electric Light Orchestra before Xanadu’s Olivia Newton-John steps onto the screen.
