Thursday is “Bike to Work Day,” easily a feat to get behind if your commute is less than 10 miles. But for those who live farther away from their place of profession, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) will offer free rides to bicyclists on Metro buses and trains throughout the county.

biketowork1In addition, other transit providers, including Long Beach Transit, Big Blue Bus, Commerce, Culver CityBus, Glendale Beeline, Montebello Bus Lines, Norwalk Transit, Torrance Transit, LADOT, Beach Cities Transit, City of El Monte Transit, Pasadena ARTS, and the City of Carson will also offer free transit rides to bicyclists who board with a bicycle or bicycle helmet. Metrolink will offer free transit rides all week to bicyclists who board with a bicycle.

Metro will also be sponsoring more than 60 bicycle pit stops with local organizations in celebration of Bike to Work Day. Bicyclists will be invited to stop by for refreshments and free giveaways. Pit stops in Long Beach will be located outside The Federal Bar at 102 Pine Avenue, right next door to the Metro Blue Line station on First Street, and at the Aquarium of the Pacific at 100 Aquarium Way. Participants will need to show a valid TAP card.

For those who pledge to bike to work, Metro will offer a chance to win prizes such as a REI Novarra Buzz city bike among other bonuses for bicycling. Pledge by taking a selfie with your bike along with a description of your commute and post it to Twitter or Instagram with #BikeWeekLA. Or visit Metro’s website, here, and pledge online.

It’s easy to ride Metro with a bicycle. All Metro buses are equipped with front bike racks and bikes may also be taken on Metro trains during all system hours.
