We’re rolling out all of our Haunted Long Beach series videos ahead of Sunday’s debut of our newest edition: A tour of the historic Bembridge House in Drake Park.

But first, we revisit the legend of the former Fire Station 12—now a City Council field office—which is so notorious for its ghost that it landed on a list of the nation’s 10 most haunted firehouses.

John Makemson, a firefighter known as “Smokey” who died of natural causes in 1988, has never quite left the building. Firefighters have reported numerous paranormal experiences over the years, including waking up unable to speak or move.

This one still gives us nightmares.
