The Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) announced Monday that the Aquarium of the Pacific was granted accreditation by AZA’s Independent Accreditation Commission.
“Only zoos and aquariums that meet the highest standards are accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums,” said AZA President and CEO Jim Maddy in a statement. “The community should take great pride in knowing that the Aquarium of the Pacific is a proven leader in the care and conservation of wildlife, and in inspiring people to take action to protect the natural world.”
In order to be accredited, the Aquarium underwent a review to ensure that it has and will continue to meet the ever-rising standards in animal care, veterinary programs, conservation, education and safety, according to the release. AZA requires zoos and aquariums to be reviewed every five years in order to maintain their membership within the Association.
The Aquarium underwent an on-site inspection conducted by a team of trained professionals that observed the institution’s operations, including animal care; keeper training; safety for visitors, staff and animals; educational programs; conservation efforts; veterinary programs; financial stability; risk management; visitor services; and other areas. Top officials were interviewed at a formal hearing of AZA’s Accreditation Commission, where candidates are either granted membership, tabled or denied. Any denied institution can reapply after one year, according to the AZA.
The Aquarium of the Pacific is a nonprofit institution dedicated to nature conservation. Home to over 11,000 animals, the Aquarium is a hub for diverse cultures, the arts, the exploration of environmental issues facing our planet and the search for sustainable solutions.
