Vice-Mayor Suja Lowenthal’s office has announced that beginning tomorrow, June 12, the Local Harvest Farmers Market will be held every Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. (7 p.m. during winter months) at Band Shell Plaza in Bixby Park.
According to release from Lowenthal’s office, “residents can expect to see farm fresh fruits and veggies, field cut flowers, gourmet specialty foods, fresh cooked fare, arts & crafts, live music, and more.” Future movie nights at the band shell after the market closes are also being planned.
“The idea for a farmers[‘] market grew out of discussions between Claudia Schou (Friends of Bixby Park) and Lowenthal in trying to activate the space and inspire community members to become more involved at Bixby Park,” the release continues. “‘A Farmer’s Market will not only help revitalize our local park and the surrounding neighborhoods but will also provide our community with fresh and affordable produce and other delicious edibles,’ said Schou.”
Local Harvest Farmers Markets operates a number of certified farmers’ market, including at Marine Stadium, Huntington Beach, Buena Park, Wilmington, San Pedro, and Garden Grove. Director Lee Ostendorf is a native and resident of Long Beach
While farmers’ markets are not a dime a dozen — they’re less common and far more valuable — in Long Beach they’re becoming ever more common. The Local Harvest Farmers Market in Bixby Park will be the second such weekly event to start up in Long Beach over the last two month. The first was the Greener Good Farmers’ Market, which originated in late May and takes place at Admiral Kidd Park in West Long Beach every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
