As the summer season begins to ramp up, more and more amazing events are showing up and, quite frankly, it is hard to keep up with all of them.
For example, even though Greggory Moore wrote about this event a few days ago, I just learned about a really interesting mixed media music performance, Panther Heart Defeats The Dire Wolf (no relation) Part 1. The show is taking place tonight at the Expo Art Center, located at 4321 Atlantic Avenue, and starts at 8 PM. It seems that this event is free.
Another free show tonight is Women Of Note‘s ‘Love Lost,’ being presented in Christ Lutheran Church at 6500 Stearns Street, just east of Palo Verde. It will include a capella and accompanied songs spanning many centuries.
If you’re in the mood to dust off your tie-dye, you can hit Cubensis Fridays. Cubensis has been around for decades, and plays the music of the Grateful Dead. They’re really very good, actually. So good, in fact that Jerry Garcia himself sanctioned the group and, for a while, the Dead’s last keyboard player, the legendary Vince Welnick, was a member until his untimely death in 2006. They perform at the PCH Club, inside the Best Western Golden Sails Hotel on PCH. Music starts at 9 PM.
I’m sure you already know about the Long Beach Green Festival taking place tomorrow. I’ve written two pieces about it, and Greggory Moore published another yesterday. It has become a really enjoyable community event, and the new location, Marina Green Park, is really gorgeous.
The city’s most popular band, Boxcar 7, lays down their blues and soul review at the Gaslamp at 7 PM tomorrow night. The Gaslamp is located on the corner of PCH and Loynes.
On Sunday, the Long Beach Chorale presents ‘Sing Out,’ its final concert of the year, at Grace First Presbyterian Church. Music starts at 4, and tickets are $20. Get there early, though, because their performances always sell out.
Also at 4 on Sunday is the 2nd performance by Women of Note of their ‘Lost Love’ concert, this time in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church at 7th and Atlantic Avenue.
Sunday also finds legendary jazz bassist Brian Bromberg playing at the most popular venue in Long Beach, Fingerprints Music. It is difficult to summarize Brian’s credits. The short list is Sting, Elvis Costello, Steven Tyler, Michael Bublé, Josh Groban, Diana Krall, Andrea Bocelli, David Foster, George Benson, Bob James, Lee Ritenour, Kenny G, Chris Botti, Boney James, and Dave Koz. Call Fingerprints to get on the guest list.
This list doesn’t even scratch the surface, though. There are events by the Long Beach Symphony, the Long Beach Opera, all the local theater groups, live music in countless restaurants and bars, art exhibitions… It just goes on and on.
