1:55pm | The Long Beach branch of the NAACP is inviting the community to the documentary screening of the “Black Patriots in the Civil War” segment from For Love of Liberty at its annual Veterans Recognition Meeting on November 20.
Frank Martin, the writer, director, and producer, will attend the meeting to discuss the film and recognize Veterans’ Day. The powerful documentary film chronicles African-Americans who risked their lives to create and preserve freedom for their country while attempting to acquire it for themselves. The documentary, which won the award for Outstanding Documentary at the 42nd Annual NAACP Image Awards, includes personalities such as Halle Berry, Avery Brooks, Walter Cronkite, Mel Gibson, Angela Bassett, Bill Cosby, Alfre Woodard, Ice-T, Colin Powell, Morgan Freeman, Susan Sarandon, Ruby Dee, Ossie Davis, Robert Duvall, Kris Kristofferson, Robert Townsend, Julian Bond, Danny Glover, Donald Sutherland, Louis Gossett, Jr., John Travolta and many others.
This is a great opportunity to gain additional knowledge regarding the contributions African-American veterans made for our country. The Veterans Recognition Meeting will be held at the Ernest McBride Park, 1550 Martin Luther King Blvd. The program will begin at 3:00pm. The Black Patriots in the Civil War segment of the documentary is thirty-five minutes. A reception will follow the program. It is free and open to the public with a reservation.
