1:00pm | The AVP Tour made its long-awaited comeback to Long Beach over the weekend, drawing large crowds thanks to dazzling volleyball action and free admission. After a successful event in 2008, the beach volleyball tournament elected not to return to Long Beach last year. But the sport is too popular here to stay away for too long, perhaps thanks to its biggest star.
Misty May, Long Beach State alum and perhaps the most famous volleyball player ever, captured the Long Beach Open women’s championship in a triumphant return with partner Nicole Branagh. The duo defeated Annett Davis and Jenny Johnson Jordan with a 21-16, 21-19 victory at Marina Green Park downtown.
On the men’s side, Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers won their fifth straight tournament by defeating Sean Scott and John Hyden with a 17-21, 21-17, 15-6 win.
