Although we may already appreciate the scope of cultural diversity that flourishes in our fair City, CSULB is an often overlooked font of creative energy. Aside from the regular programming for the Carpenter Performing Arts Center and the amazing curatorial prowess of the University Art Museum, the students of the University are constantly sharing their performance skills.
In March, for example, there are a number of wonderful student performances. On Monday, March 11th at 8 PM the CSULB Wind Symphony and the CSULB Symphonic Band are performing at the Carpenter Center. The Program includes Kingfishers Catch Fire from John Mackey, the Music department’s newest Faculty Composer.
The Contemporary Dance Concert, presented several times between the 12th and 15th, features the works of undergraduate choreographers. Eleven pieces will be performed at the Martha Knoebel Theatre.
Running through the 15th is The Saint Plays, a production of Cal Rep, which features CSULB’s Graduate Theater Performance students working in collaboration with faculty and playwrights. The play focuses on the lives of 5 saints, some well known, others less so.
A personal favorite of mine is the annual World Percussion performance. Led by long-time faculty member Michael Carney, this is an exciting explosion of sonic energy.
