While most schools and businesses observe the Veteran’s Day holiday by taking the day off, Lakewood Christian Schools (LCS) in Long Beach, CA, takes a different approach by hosting an annual Veteran’s Day Service. The hour-long program is student-led with musical performances from the LCS Middle School Band, Choir, and Kindergarten and First-grade classes. The objective is teaching the students and guests the importance of recognizing Veteran’s Day and those who served our country. The different branches of the military are highlighted, and gratitude for our Veterans is the theme. LCS Principal, Brenda Barton says, “The real heart happens at the end of the program when we invite any Veterans in the audience to come forward so that each student may shake their hand.”

In addition, the annual Lakewood Christian Schools Christmas Project is kicked off during the Veteran’s Day Service. At LCS, students learn that Christmas isn’t about having the most presents underneath the tree, it is about loving others well. LCS partners with Honoring Our Fallen, an organization that provides support for families who have lost a U.S. military loved one. The elementary school students bring gifts for the children who have lost a parent as a part of their Hero Children’s Bereavement Program. Furthermore, the middle school students raise money for Inheritance of Hope, an organization whose mission is to inspire hope in young families facing the loss of a parent through memory making events.

This year’s Veteran’s Day Chapel will be on Friday, November 9, 2018, at 10:45am. The service will be held in the main sanctuary at Arbor Road Church located at 5336 Arbor Road, Long Beach, CA 90808. Visit their Facebook page for more information and to RSVP.

“It is always a blessing to attend the Veteran’s Day program at LCS. All the staff and students do a great job honoring our Veterans, the flag, and modeling patriotism. Each year I look forward to shaking hands with all the students.” says Donald Rounds, LCS grandparent and retired Staff Sergeant of the United States Air Force Reserve.
