The Long Beach Museum of Art (LBMA) will open its main 2016 spring exhibition on Friday, March 11, 2016 as Beyond the Frame: New Media Arts from Taiwan, “an innovative exhibition featuring new media artists who continually evolve their creative practice with rapid advances in media technology,” the museum announced Thursday.
The exhibition features the work of six Taiwanese artists: Daniel Lee, Shyu Ruey-Shiann, Lin Jiun-Ting, Tseng Wei-Hao, Wu Chi-Tsung and Yao Chung-Han, who blur the line between artistic tradition and modern technology, both conceptually and through each of their chosen media. Beyond the Frame will display works created using new technologies, including video art, virtual art, interactive art and robotics, according to the release.

“The Museum has had a long history presenting cutting-edge technology used by artists, and Beyond The Frame continues in that tradition,” stated Executive Director Ron Nelson. “We are absolutely thrilled to be working with these artists and to showcase their talents to our members and patrons of LBMA. We know everyone will be enthralled by these unique installations.”
Organized by the Taiwan Academy, Taipei Economic & Cultural Office in Los Angeles and curated by Josiane Lih-Huei Lai, Beyond the Frame encourages a conversation between the viewers and the interactive artworks, as most of the pieces will respond to movement and touch. The viewer’s interaction with a work becomes the experiment, allowing the six artists to alter our perception of art and how we react and adapt to an an environment continuously in flux.

The mixed-media artworks integrate high or low-tech objects, mechanisms, sound, light, video, and other variables to alter the meaning of the art object itself in an effort to explore the interactions between all of the varied components. Whether very apparent or subtly incorporated, Eastern philosophy and abstract concepts within each artwork challenge the possibilities of the medium used and span the boundaries between traditional and modern, between East and West, according to the release.
Beyond the Frame will run through May 29, 2016.
