This Saturday, ArtExchange (ArtX) will present three new exhibitions at the Second Saturday Art Walk in the East Village Arts District on May 9. National and local artists’ work will be on display and for sale in ArtX’s myriad studios from 6:00PM to 10:00PM for the monthly “artXwalk.”
The New Familiar, curated by ArtX Studio Artist Steven Frost, to be found in the Main Gallery, will consist of works made by artists who participated in the 2014 Artists’ Cooperative Residency and Exhibitions (ACRE) residency program in rural Steuben, Wisconsin. These works of emerging, working and mid-career creatives from all over the U.S. will explore how everyday objects can be broken down to offer new perspectives on what was once considered familiar.
“While working to further develop our Studio Artist Program for emerging and working artists, we look to the success of programs like ACRE for fresh ideas to implement within our community arts center,” said ArtX CEO Nicolassa Galvez in a statement.
She described the Studio Artist Program at ArtX as a tool for curators to further develop their skills. “We look forward to providing this opportunity to more curators to bring fresh and relevant artwork to Long Beach,” she said.
The New Familiar, featuring work by artists Marisa Williamson, Samuel Hertz, Sean Patrick Landis, Stephane Lie, Sarah Hotchkiss and Megan Mueller (work pictured above), opens Saturday, May 9 and will run through Thursday, June 18.
PRINT SALE // ART SALE, two new exhibitions at ArtX, at The Collective Print Studio and illuminoidal arts studio, will have their opening receptions during the Second Saturday Art Walk. The print studio will showcase affordable, original artworks by Long Beach local artists while illuminoidal arts founder Leah Dixon will display works by Jan Edward Vogels and Cybele Rowe. The two were recently honored as one of OC Weekly’s “People of 2015.”
Margie Darrow, Rebecca Giesking, Noel Madrid, Joy Shannon, Christine Fuchs, John Thatcher Montgomery, Jr., Kenny McBride and J. Renee Tanner will be opening their studios to showcase new and in-progress pieces on Saturday as well.
Works in these studios will include Montgomery’s TRANONMAI, Catalog Entries, a conceptual digital performance “navigating loss of home, livelihood and sanity.” Tanner will showcase My Hood, a series of cityscapes inspired by downtown Long Beach architecture.
For those that can’t make it this Saturday, ArtX is open Mondays from noon to 4:00PM and Sundays from 10:00AM to noon or by appointment by calling Nicolassa Galvez at (562) 999 -1482.
