The International City Theatre has announced its 2014 seasons with a recurring theme of American storytelling and life.

The season will open on January 24 with the Karin Bowersock-penned musical Let’s Misbehave: The Music and Lyrics of Cole Porter, featuring the music of the famed American songster. The musical has been making the rounds across the country for well over a year and makes its California debut here in Long Beach.

The full 2014 schedule:

Let’s Misbehave: The Music and Lyrics of Cole Porter, January 24 through February 16 (with previews on January 22 and 23) built from the songbook of the American songwriter Cole Porter.

Other-Desert-Cities-posterFlyin’ West, March 14 through April 6 (previews March 12 and 13), published in 1995, is the story of a group of African-American women and the way their lives change after the West opens up. Touching on themes of feminism, freedom and pride, this play both informs and entertains.

Other Desert Cities, June 6 through 29 (previews June 4 and 5), written by Jon Robin Baitz, premiered off-Broadway in January of 2011 then later moved to Broadway in November of the same year. It is about a family with various political views and a big secret someone is willing to tell while others don’t want it reopened.

Trying, August 22 through September 14 (previews August 20 and 21), which first premiered in Chicago back in 2009, tells its story from the point of view of United States Attorney General Francis Biddle’s assistant, during the last year of the Nuremberg Trials.

Glorious!, October 10 through November 2 (previews October 8 and 9) tells the story of Florence Foster Jenkins, an American amateur opera singer who was known—and ridiculed—for being the “worst singer in the world.”
