The Arts Council for Long Beach and Mayor Robert Garcia will partner for the second consecutive year to host the annual State of the Arts event, a day to celebrate the outstanding work of local artists, arts advocates and others who support the arts in Long Beach, on Thursday, September 22 at 9:00AM at Liberty Art Gallery.
“At last year’s event, Mayor Garcia announced major new commitments to the arts,” said Griselda Suárez, executive director for the Arts Council, in a statement. “Most significantly, he announced he would ask the city council to explore reinstating the City’s dedicated funding for the arts – a promise he made good on and that is now under study.”
This year, the State of the Arts coincides with the Arts Council’s 40th Anniversary to the day, which was formed on September 22, 1976, according to the release.
The Arts Council will announce at the event five individuals or organizations, selected through a public nomination process, that will be honored with its Annual Arts Awards: the James H. Ackerman Arts Philanthropist, Arts Educator, Arts Volunteer, Arts Innovator and Economic Development Arts Trailblazer awards.
Prior to the announcements, live music by locally-based gypsy jazz quartet Hedgehog Swing and a continental breakfast will be served. The event is free and open to the public. Please RSVP to [email protected] or by calling 562.435.2787.
Liberty Art Gallery located at 435 Alamitos Avenue.
