Good, evil, truth and justice will all be put to the test when the University Players at Cal State Long Beach (CSULB) present “The Last Days of Judas Iscariot” later this month.
According to the University Players, the production revolves around Judas, the man who betrayed Jesus, and his trial in the afterlife.
“Judas’s life and final acts are dissected in the courtroom, amidst a parade of witnesses that includes Mary Magdalene, Saint Monica, Mother Theresa, and Sigmund Freud,” the University Players said in a statement. “While the case at hand may be the redemption of one man, the implications extend to issues of morality, faith, society, and the human condition. Darkly comedic in moments, and tragic in others, the nature of truth, justice, and forgiveness.”
The play features the direction of CSULB theatre arts alumna Olivia Trevino, who directed “Red Light Winter” in the University Players’ 2013-2014 season.
“Throughout this text, the credibility of authority figures is challenged, the sins of saints are exposed, people who we might write off as ‘bad guys’ are humanized. Suddenly, our moral definitions aren’t so tidy and neat,” Trevino said in a statement.
The University Players will perform “The Last Days of Judas Iscariot” from February 27 through March 8, Tuesday through Saturday. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $12 for seniors and students. For tickets and more information, click here.
