The Arts Council for Long Beach announced the three winners of this summer’s Port of Long Beach photography competition at a reception Saturday, October 4, at the Liberty Gallery & Event Space in Long Beach’s East Village Arts District. The reception was the kickoff celebration to a month-long art exhibition showcasing the Port images captured by both professional and amateur photographers.
The first-place winner was Cherene Birkholz for her photo Oriental Queen, the second-place winner was Joan Day for Jewels of the Night, and the third-place winner was Dave Freeman for Watercolors.

The public is invited to come see this unique perspective on Port operations. The exhibit, with nearly 100 images on display, is at the Liberty Gallery & Event Space, located at 435 Alamitos Ave., Long Beach, CA 90802. The show runs from October 5 to October 26 and is open for viewing Wednesday through Sunday, noon to 5:00PM.

The photographs are the wondrous result of a workshop taught this summer by Port photographers that was followed by a twilight boat tour of the Port, giving workshop attendees a chance to shoot the Port at dusk. Eighty beginning, amateur and professional photographers participated. Both the workshop and the behind-the-scenes Port tour took place in August and the participants then submitted their best pieces for the juried gallery exhibit.
The “Port of Long Beach PHOTOGALLERY” marks the second year in a row the Port has teamed with the Arts Council for Long Beach to promote cultural arts through photography for Long Beach Arts Month.
