Music of Chance and Microtones
John Cage and Ben Johnston

John Schneider and Tom Peters

This concert celebrates the music of two American giants. The evening will begin with a rare simultaneous performance of John Cage’s 26′ 1.1499″ for a String Player and 45′ for a Speaker with Tom Peters on double bass and KPFK’s John Schneider as speaker.

For the second half you will hear the microtonal music of Ben Johnston, beginning with two solo bass works Alap and Progression. The evening will close with John Schneider performing on just-tuned guitar with acclaimed bass-baritone Paul Berkholds in selections from Johnston’s The Tavern.

Peters is a member of the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra, the modern music proponents Ensemble Green, and is on the faculty of the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at CSULB.

Schneider, popular for his adventurous Global Village radio program every Thursday on KPFK, is a tireless advocate and masterful performer of microtonal music.  He plays a variety of modified acoustic guitars, some created to perform specific pieces of music.
