Students model design students’ garments at last year’s Campus Couture Fashion Show.

11:01am |  Fashionistas will be flocking to the Carpenter Performing Arts Center Friday evening to catch a glimpse of some 200 original garments designed, constructed and modeled by Cal State Long Beach students will be featured on the runway.

The Campus Couture Fashion Show, in its 23rd year this year, highlights the work of about 50 textile and clothing majors in the CSULB Fashion Merchandising and Design Department.  While design students create the garments, merchandising students participate in the fundraising and production of the show, according to information provided by CSULB spokesman Rick Gloady.

The show is judged by influential fashion industry professionals. Among this year’s judges will be Jason Peskin, founder and CEO of Project Ethos; Ainsley Cohen of Showroom 907; Diana Ramos, public relations director for Bloomingdale’s; and Kyle Shafer, a member of the design team for Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen’s contemporary clothing line Elizabeth and James.

Campus Couture is one of the largest events the campus hosts each year, Gloady said. Planning and fundraising for the event begins a year in advance in order for the students to have the opportunity to show their designs.

“This is an opportunity for students to present their vision to the world of fashion,” said Suzanne Marshall, director of CSULB’s Fashion Merchandising and Design Program and the faculty adviser who assists in coordinating the show throughout the year. “This year’s coordinators are looking forward to putting on the most professional runway show yet by utilizing unique lighting effects, staging, music and choreography.”

General admission tickets to the show, which starts at 7 p.m., are $20, and parking will be $5 (cash-only).

The Carpenter Performing Arts Center is located at 6200 Atherton St.
