Expect to hear the rip-roaring sounds of a formation flight this Friday, as an F-16 Fighting Falcon, F-15 Eagle, F-22 Raptor and an F-35 Lightning II fly over Long Beach in honor of the 70th anniversary of Captain Charles “Chuck” Yeager’s first supersonic flight on October 14, 1947.

Launched from Edwards Air Force Base, the warplanes will fly over Long Beach area schools including Lowell Elementary, Mann Elementary, Luther Burbank Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, Roosevelt Elementary and George Washington Middle School between approximately 12:18PM and 12:28PM, according to Long Beach Airport (LGB). The flyover is part of a two-day celebration Friday and Saturday honoring both Yeager’s flight and Edwards Air Force Base 70th anniversary.

The aircraft are noticeably louder than other aircraft and should be easily heard in neighborhoods citywide. Formation flights will also fly over schools in the Antelope Valley, Bakersfield, San Bernardino County, Riverside County, Los Angeles County and Simi Valley to support STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education.
