Bixby Knolls will transform into a folk music lover’s paradise September 5 for First Fridays, as Long Beach gears up for this year’s Folk Revival Festival. The monthly event, which takes place on Atlantic Avenue from Bixby Road to San Antonio Drive, will feature a pie eating contest, beard trimming, musical guests and more.
Edward Jones, located at 3916 Atlantic Avenue, will host a pie eating contest, with pies donated by Rossmoor Pastries. Contestants will have the chance to win free tickets to the Folk Revival Festival, featuring Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, which takes place on September 27 in Downtown Long Beach.
Esquire Barber Shop will offer beard or mustache trimmings to entice people into entering the facial hair competition at the music festival.
Musical guests like Ponderosa Aces, Bearcoon, Carol Martin, Black Lab and the Banjo, Lipstick Lumberjack, Honey Whiskey Trio, Jester McCool, and When Pigs Fly will play on a stage during the First Fridays event.
MOVE will also perform a special folk set in front of the Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association’s office.
Guests will also have the chance to give back at the event. The Teachers Association of Long Beach will host a Pop Up FREE Store, where they will ask for donations like clothing and school supplies to assist local students.
Attendees can also drop off canned goods to the First Bank on the corner of Atlantic and Carson for their Hunger Month Canned Food Drive, and get a free root beer float while they’re at it.
