It is a mainstay in the Bixby Knolls area on Atlantic Avenue just north of the 405 freeway. They have been in business since 1969 in the same place at 3697 Atlantic Ave, at the 37th Street intersection. They serve good old American home cookin’, and they bake everything fresh–and I mean everything: pies, cakes, muffins, scones, bread, and the Pot Pie crust are baked fresh daily.
I stop into Bake-N-Broil a few times a month, and am always looking forward to the next visit. As breakfast is my favorite meal of the day, I generally make the trek to Bake-N-Broil in the mornings. For starters, I have to tell you that the sausage gravy that they put on their homemade biscuits is phenomenal. You will have dreams about it until you just have to go back, mark my words. There are immense chunks of sausage throughout this wonderfully creamy goodness, not to mention that the flaky, warm biscuit that it lands upon melts in your mouth, just like the stick of butter that goes into making them.
This gravy also adorns another of my all time Bake-N-Broil favorites, and that is Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs. It is a large portion of tender beef that has been battered and deep fried to absolute perfection. I order it with eggs over easy, seasoned browns (this means that they put onions and peppers in the hash browns), and sourdough toast. It is to die for!
There are many great things on the Breakfast menu, including many that are not as rough on the ticker as the Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs. The ham and eggs, while not one of them, is salty and delicious. They serve you a nice portion of ham that is very tasty. The pancakes are grand, especially with some strawberries on top, and if omelettes are your gig, I have yet to have one that I did not like. As you can tell, I am a big fan of the Bake-N-Broil breakfast.
Lunch and dinner offer an entirely different side to the Bake-N-Broil experience. They have all the regular stuff that you would expect from a diner atmosphere, like burgers, club sandwiches, and BLT’s. They also have fried chicken that will melt in your mouth, excellent pot roast, and a few different selections of fish. The homemade quiche is another item that sets Bake-N-Broil apart. Because they bake the crust fresh and the selections change daily, you’ll want to take a look at the board when you walk in to find out which varieties of quiche are on tap for the day.
If you are in the mood for some great food–along with fast and courteous service–for a reasonable price, then make that drive over to Jongewaard’s Bake-N-Broil. I promise you that you will love it.
Until Next Time, Keep Eating Long Beach,
