Long Beach packs a lot inside its borders, but even an LB Foodie like me occasionally ventures out. With Los Angeles and all of its cool historical eateries just 20 minutes away (give or take a few hours depending on traffic), can you blame me? There’s the original Tommy Burger, The Pantry, and Philippe’s French Dips just to name a few. Last week, after a late night watching the Dodgers put the hurt on the Astros, four of us decided to make a trip over to Hollywood and catch a bite or two at Pink’s Hot Dogs on La Brea. Brett, Boot, and I had all been there before but my buddy Brian Han, a Pink’s rookie, was in for a treat. Pink’s has been serving their all-beef hot dogs dressed up every which way you can imagine out of the same small building on La Brea since 1939. The interior walls are adorned with autographed photos of pretty much any star that you can think of, and the front window and counter sport a list of different hot dog concoctions that is almost as long as the line that you wait in to get one.
Last week the infamous line was surprisingly short; we only waited about 15 minutes, which was barely enough time to figure out what we wanted from the long menu. When I say that you can get most anything on a hot dog I really mean it. Pastrami, chili, bacon, guacamole, nacho cheese – the list goes on. I have tried many of the different choices including The Martha Stewart (a 10″ dog with relish, onions, bacon, chopped tomatoes, sauerkraut & sour cream), The Three Dog Night (3 hot dogs wrapped in a giant tortilla with 3 slices of cheese, 3 slices of bacon, chili & onions), and The Mulholland Drive (a 10″ dog with grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, nacho cheese & bacon).
This time I decided to do something different and chose the America the Beautiful Dog. This dog consists of a 12″ Jalapeno dog with pastrami, bacon, lettuce and chopped tomatoes. It was a heart stopping delight, but that did not sway my brother and I from splitting a Huell Howser Dog, two hot dogs in one bun with chili, cheese, mustard and onions. We also ordered some onion rings just in case our hearts needed a little more lubrication. Boot ordered a Martha Stewart and Brian got a Mulholland Drive. With so much food, we were all so stuffed that we just sat there for a bit until it felt ok to walk.
If you are ever in Hollywood and looking for one of those great eating adventures, not to mention someplace that any real Angelino has to have under their belt, stop into Pink’s. They are open all hours of the night and have something for pretty much everyone. The line usually wraps around the building and can take as long as an hour and a half to order on the weekends, but is well worth it. For all the right reasons, you’ll never think of a hot dog the same way again.
