North Long Beach will have its very own weekly farmers market starting this Monday, with its first occurrence to be commemorated at 3:30PM with a short welcome program, Vice Mayor Rex Richardson announced.
Coordinated by Harbor Area Farmers Markets (HAFM), a project of the South Coast Interfaith Council (SCIC), the farmers market will take place Mondays from 2:00PM to 6:00PM at Houghton Park, on the corner of Harding Street and Atlantic Avenue.
“We are thrilled to welcome the Harbor Area Farmers Markets to Houghton Park,” Richardson said in a statement. “From community gardens to crop swaps, North Long Beach is a major hub for urban agriculture. The addition of the Houghton Park Farmers Market is a welcome addition to the renaissance taking place in Uptown!”
Brewery Coming to North Long Beach as Part of Uptown Development
SCIC, the oldest and largest interfaith council in the Southern California region, opened the first farmers market in Long Beach in 1980 to serve the downtown area with access to healthy food. The Houghton Park Farmers Market will be the seventh weekly market operated by HAFM and the only farmers market in the city of Long Beach on Monday.
“It has been a long term goal of the Harbor Area Farmers Markets to open a weekly certified farmers market at Houghton Park to serve the 9th District community,” HAFM Market Manager Kelli Johnson said in a statement. “We are proud to realize this goal with the new Monday market!”
Certified farmers who will be at the Houghton Park Farmers Market include:
- Divine Harvest with vegetables, avocados, berries and eggs
- Chavez Farms with greens, strawberries and herbs
- Munoz Farms with eggs, potatoes, sweet potatoes, citrus and tropical fruit
- Fernandez Dates from Coachella
- Phillip the Apple Artist from Tehachapi
- Healthy Sprouts Co. with local micro greens
- Energy Bee Farm with various honey varieties
The food court will also offer a variety of musubi, burritos, tamales, fresh roasted corn, fresh roasted peanuts, fresh juices, hummus and dips, yogurts, popcorn and lemonade, according to the announcement.
The market will accept Cal Fresh SNAP benefits, and offers “Market Match”, a program that matches up to $10 for Cal Fresh and WIC benefits.
