My first impression as we walked in was, “Oh no, it’s empty.” And for me this is never a good sign. As the only customers though, I have to tell you we got incredible service. Our server was very chatty and ever so bubbly, cheerfully informing us that the chef was actually from France so the food was most authentic. She made recommendations and suggestions and made everything sound so wonderful, I confess, we may have over-ordered a bit.
We each started with a bowl of French onion soup and a dish of crab cakes to share. The French onion soup was delicious, and not just your ordinary onion soup. An unexpected tangy aftertaste gave this soup a touch of something extra from the usual French onion soup—very nice. The crab cakes were moist and had an unexpected hint of tarragon. I could have more of those, but I had to pace myself, as there was still more to come.
Our entrees included a pastry-wrapped salmon served with French fries, and the chicken crepe topped with sautéed mushrooms. I think I preferred the crepe myself, as the mushrooms were very flavorful; however, the chicken was a little over-done and a bit dry. The salmon was too fishy tasting for me, and there was just too much sauce on top, which spoiled what could have been a nice flaky pastry.
All that being said, I will have to admit that I may only order the chocolate soufflé when I return, which was absolutely amazing: a light, airy and chocolate decadence served with a dollop of scrumptious cream that any chocolate lover would be sure to enjoy. A return visit is definitely required if only for this exquisite dessert.
Overall I would say this place was a hit. Worth trying out if you are ever in Bixby Knolls, but definitely leave room for dessert…..Bon appetite!
