Long Beach is full of great Mexican food as you can tell from the wide variety of nominations we received during our Best Mexican Food in the LBC competition. One recent commenter noted that Los Compadres does not receive the same amount of hype as some other places, like Enrique’s. Having been to Los Compadres once already, I wanted to try a few other things on the menu before writing about it, so Taylor and I decided to give it another go last night before the 1 year anniversary show of Swoop’s World Radio. I am excited to say that the food, service, and drinks were all very good!
With two locations in town, we chose the one located at Anaheim and Obispo, which is much more then what it looks like from the outside. Once you pull into the parking lot and waltz through the front door, be prepared to walk into a very classy restaurant. The softly lit décor consists of beautiful booths with leaded glass and dark hardwood. If you go on a busy night, put your name in and make your way to the bar for some pre-dinner libations. They have great drinks! Taylor and I both ordered Cadillac Margaritas made with good tequila and a full shot of Grand Marnier, which hit the spot while we munched on fresh chips and wonderful salsa with tons of flavor during the always-difficult decision making process. The last time I dined at Los Compadres, I had the very tasty enchiladas, filled with cheese and a good amount of shredded beef and covered in a delectable red sauce. This time I was going to try something different and it was a hard decision because everything looked so good!
I gladly took down an entire Cadillac while making a decision about what I wanted to eat, which only stoked the flames of hunger that were already burning inside me. I decided that I was going to have the Chili Colorado, which is chunks of pork that are simmered in a red chili sauce for many hours till the meat just falls apart in your mouth. It was served with rice and beans and piping hot, and I mean HOT, flour tortillas. The pork was so tender that it melted with the first bite. The Colorado sauce was perfect, with tons of flavor, a nice heat, and a depth that I truly enjoyed.
Taylor really scored on his pick. He got the Carne Asada con Camarrones. This was a nicely sized steak with a side of four shrimp prepared any way that they offer. Now if you have ever read our review of the food in San Felipe you know that I have a love for Costa Azul shrimp. These are large shrimp stuffed with cheese, wrapped in bacon and then deep fried – basically little bundles of love straight from heaven. Taylor was kind enough to share one with me and it was the best that I have had since my Mexican adventure last year.
In conclusion I would have to say that yes, Los Compadres is one of the best Mexican places in the LBC and it shows. The place is usually pretty busy on the weekends, and some weeknights. You need to make a trip over and check it out if you have not. You will be greatly pleased with the food, drinks, and atmosphere.
