So once again, I packed up the family and headed over to Le Yen Chinese Family Restaurant, conveniently located on the corner at 4140 Atlantic Ave. in Long Beach.

The Chinese-American restaurant features beautifully handcrafted lanterns hung throughout the restaurant, which created a relaxing ambiance for our evening. Le Yen’s menu consists of traditional Chinese entrees that you would expect to see like beef broccoli and chow mein. I did not find anything overly exotic.

We ordered ginger beef, three-princess chicken (at my daughter’s request), chow mein, and hot and sour soup. All of our meals were infused with a blend of fresh vegetables. When I know I’m eating Chinese Food I will typically fast the entire day because I expect artery-clogging greasy goodness; however, I was surprised to find the meal was light and fresh-tasting. My waist certainly thanked me for the calorie reduction but my taste buds were left craving a bit more. Perhaps MSG isn’t always a bad thing.

Le Yen also has a kids’ menu of more American items for those picky eaters like chicken nuggets and french fries. I force my kids to eat what we give them or starve so I did not pay too much attention to the modified menu but the kids’ meals were a good deal at $4.75.

I was expecting a place that states family restaurant in their name to be a good place to take the kids and they deliver. I’m still surprised that waitresses voluntarily offer rice to my kids, but hey, they are the ones cleaning up – not me. The food is fresh, reasonably priced, and healthy (if you’re into that sort of thing).
