As I have mentioned many times, Fourth Street is one of my favorite stretches of our city and it just moved up a notch in my book. My girlfriend has gotten on board with the food adventure and is always looking for new places for us to go, and to conclude our recent Sunday Funday she suggested that we go to Lola’s for dinner. I had heard a lot about this place and was totally down for the new experience, so we rolled over there, walked right in and sat down. The delicious smell that we encountered upon walking in won me over right then and there.
As we looked over the menu we ordered up a carafe of sangria to get things rolling. They also have a full assortment of beer and wine to quench your thirst if you are so inclined. While we were deciding what we wanted, the chips and salsas came to the table. They serve a red chili salsa that has a great kick to it and is very flavorful, but then there is the cilantro salsa, which has a nice heat to it that is accompanied by cilantro and green chili flavors. When asked about it all the waitress would say is that it was secret. I guess that I will have to settle for that, even though as a cook myself I would love to know more.
After reading the description of the Tomatillo Steak I was sold, and could not even think about anything else: “Our famous carne asada topped with grilled onions, tomatillo, bacon, and jack cheese served with rice, frijoles charros and your choice of tortillas”. It lived up to all of my expectations. It was a large piece of asada that was tender enough that you could cut it with a fork. The steak served as a foundation for the fajita-style vegetables that included the onions and tomatillos, and then there was the bacon. As far as I am concerned you can add bacon to anything and it will make it better. All of this was then smothered with jack cheese that was melted to perfection, becoming the cohesive layer that kept all the other toppings from falling by the wayside. The remaining space on the plate was filled with generious portions of beans and rice that were a perfect complement to the overall flavor of the dish.
Dianne decided to order Lola’s Sopes. If you have never had a sope, let me explain: it is a small corn cake that is topped with all kinds of different goodness depending on what you like. Dianne chose carne asada, and when her plate arrived there were three of their homemade sopes covered with beans, lettuce, carne asada, and queso fresco. I had a few bites, just to make sure that it was safe for her to eat – and they were really tasty.
Lola’s Mexican Cuisine is another excellent option in the Mexican food scene that we have in the LBC, offering up delicious variety that includes many vegetarian choices. I think that it is most definitely one of the very best. The homemade food, great atmosphere, and kind people make it everything that you could ask for in night out with your better half or just a meal with friends. Make the trip, let us know what you think, and –
