Popular waterfront restaurant McKenna’s on the Bay may have officially closed its doors as of last week, but the institution’s year-old airport outpost–dubbed McKenna’s on the Fly–will continue to live on, LGB officials say.
Bancap, the owners of Alamitos Bay Landing, the complex where McKenna’s on the Bay has served Long Beach and Orange County patrons for the last 10 years, announced January 2 that they were taking possession of the restaurant because the company had lapsed on its lease payments.
“…It’s ownership group (McKenna’s on the Bay LLC) has experienced financial challenges with the passing of its majority owner, and former managing member of the LLC, Nicholas Limer,” Bancap said in a statement announcing McKenna’s closure. A Bancap representative confirmed that the restaurant would be closed and no longer serving the public as of January 2 and that the company hopes to enter a lease with a similar tenant “in the near future.”
The closure of McKenna’s on the Bay is not anticipated to have any affect on the eatery’s Long Beach Airport location, which opened with a burger bar and small dining room inside of the new state-of-the-art concourse in 2012.
“The name, ‘McKenna’s,’ is licensed through LGB’s managing concessionaire, Paradies, which assures us that business will continue as usual,” said LGB’s public affairs official Stephanie Montuya-Morisky.
McKenna’s owner Limer succumbed to pancreatic cancer in November, after a two-year battle. In October, Limer had been found to be at fault in a traffic accident on Second Street that killed one motorcyclist and injured another. He was facing misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter charges at the time of his death.
McKenna’s on the Fly is located inside the north terminal at the Long Beach Airport, 4235 Douglas Dr.
