While flipping through The Community Shopper for coupons as I usually do, I ran across a new sushi place that I had to try called Kampai Sushi House. Bonus! It’s really close to my work and their Grand Opening was planned for Oct 20th . I was intrigued – all day, everything on the menu was 50% off (not including the lunch specials). I invited another sushi lover to give this place a shot with me.

When we arrived we saw the restaurant is located in a little strip mall on Los Alamitos Blvd, there is enough parking and we could get frozen yogurt after (that’s always a plus). Once we got inside we were the first to be seated at around 11:00am on a Thursday, so we beat the lunch rush of all the businesses in the area. The decor was clean and simple – it’s uncluttered and the focus was on the modern sushi bar which had a nice display of fresh fish. There are two TVs in the restaurant in case you need to catch a game.

We decided to start with a seaweed salad, and I became so excited about it that I forgot to take a picture. It wasn’t the best seaweed salad I’ve had because they mixed in iceberg lettuce, which really just took away from the delicious seaweed flavor but the portion was big enough that for the price [$5] I wasn’t disappointed.

My friend and I decided on getting three rolls to share, and started with the Los Alamitos Roll which is a tuna and salmon roll that instead of rice was rolled in cucumber. This one was a pretty big roll and looked much prettier than most rolls I have seen. It tasted delicious, but this was the only downfall to the entire experience: They had toothpicks in the middle, and my poor friend put the whole thing in his mouth just to stab his tongue. He wasn’t very pleased; we then fished through the rest of the roll to pick them all out. I guess that’s how they had the cucumber hold that shape, but a warning would have been wonderful.

Our second choice was the Ono Roll, which had spicy tuna and shrimp tempura on the inside and was then topped with ono and jalapeño – this one was perfection. The spiciness combined with the sweetness of the eel sauce had to be my favorite!

The Baked Lobster Roll is my go-to roll and we decided to have that for the finale – if a place can’t make a sweet lobster roll then I just can’t trust them. This one had tons of lobster and just enough mayo that it added creaminess but didn’t take away from the lobster. I wish I had another one right now.

After looking at the dessert menu we decided to skip the frozen yogurt place next door and try the coconut ice cream – it was good but nothing I would ever order again, too much like vanilla and not enough coconut flavor. I think next time I’ll try the mochi, that’s always tasty.

Overall, I had a great time at Kampai Sushi House. I’d love to go back on a weekend for dinner and check out the night crowd, and also sit at the bar.
