Update: As of early April 2010, the 49rs Tavern has been closed due to various administrative issues. Last week a “For Sale” sign went up. We hope this is just a bump in the road, as the Niner has been a staple for some time now. If not, we can only implore any prospective future owners to read on so as to know what they need to carry on henceforth. Without further ado, our original review of the 49rs Tavern:

This place is a true Long Beach establishment. When I first started going to the 49rs Tavern, it was with my good friend Nick Moncure. You see, we would be sitting at the tables in front of the Nugget (the pub on campus at Long Beach State), and Nick would roll up and say, “Anybody up for a schooner and a burger?” I would tell him that I needed to go to class, and in true Moncure style he would convince me that I needed to go have a schooner and a burger with him because that class was not all that important. So we would walk over to the 49er and commence our adventure.

So what is this “schooner and a burger” thing all about? Why was it worth missing class? Well, let me tell you. You see, the burger is one of the best that you will ever have at a bar, restaurant, or drive up. It definitely stands up to the name that it has been given, God’s Own Cheeseburger, also known as the G.O. There are not many options when it comes to the G.O., but one that is necessary for me at least is to ask for it Jesus (Hey-ZEUS) style. This allows you to have a half pound patty instead of the normal third pound. The burgers are grilled on a BBQ; they crisp up the buns and then add delicious fresh tomato, lettuce, an eye-opening serving of garlic, and their special sauce. They give you a pickle and a bag of chips for your side, but they also serve one of the best pickled eggs that you can find in the LB! My mouth is watering just thinking about it, and the place is only walking distance from my front door.

The G.O. is not the only burger on the menu. You can get bacon burgers, Swiss and ham, Frisco, and a few different subs and sandwiches, or the flagship burger of the joint: The Triple Bypass. This is a monster! It consists of two third-pound patties, Swiss and American cheese, and all the toppings. As every good dive establishment should, the 49er has an eating contest. It consists of eating three (3) Triple Bypass Burgers, and if that was not enough, you have to beat the record time, which currently stands at 4:27.

To wash down any and all of the food that you decide to eat, there are many different beers that you can choose from. If you know me, I will be drinking schooners of PBR. They have all the domestics, as well as premiums, wine and non-alcoholic stuff. The drink prices are very reasonable and on Wednesdays they have a burger special! I hope that the next time I am in there indulging in a G.O. and a schooner of PBR that I see some of your new faces!

Until Next Time, Keep Eating Long Beach
