The Potholder on Broadway is definitely a must for anyone that loves a good breakfast, sometimes eccentric servers, and a truly unique environment.  I first started frequenting the “PoHo” while I was in college, and it has been a love affair ever since.  Allow me to set the vibe for you.  The restaurant sits on the corner of Broadway and Euclid in Belmont Heights. When I first started eating here, there were two rooms to sit in:  the main dining room and counter, and an extra dining area in the next storefront over.  This place has become so popular that they just keep taking over the spots next to them and now have four different rooms, with plenty of spots to sit and enjoy the wonderful food.  The walls are covered with eclectic décor rounded out with vacation pictures from all over the world with smiling faces and signs bearing the now-ubiquitous phrase, “Eat at the Potholder”.
Once you get seated and meet your server, open the menu and prepare to make some hard decisions.  The all-encompassing menu is packed with delicious dishes.  Choices range from the standard Eggs with Bacon to Cream Cheese-Stuffed French Toast. As far as some of my favorites go, I love the Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs, and the Irisher and Grand Prix omelets.  The Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs is terrific.  The steak is cut thin and breaded just right, and the gravy makes my mouth water just thinking about it.  If you like corned beef hash and you like omelets, then you will love the Irisher, an omelet with the hash inside! It’s a combination I wish I had thought of years ago.  Last but not least, the Grand Prix is the kind of omelet that has all the good stuff in it: bell peppers, sausage, ham, bacon, red and green onions, mushrooms, and cheese. It really is the perfect solution when you can’t decide what you want.
Once you take the plunge and choose a main dish, the last important decision before you can order is upon you.  What kind of potatoes do you want?  Now, for some of you this might seem like a very easy decision:  hash browns.  At the Potholder, if you go that route without even thinking about it, you have made a mistake.  Not to say that the hash browns aren’t delicious, but there is an entire new world out there.  I’m talking about SUPER SPUDS!  They start with a huge mound of their hash browns and then the magic happens.  Cheese, sautéed mushrooms, sour cream and avocado all piled on top.  I like to mix it all together and put a little Tabascy on there.  If it sounds like they are to die for, that is because they are.
So to all you people that love a good breakfast like I do, you need to make it over to the Potholder.  There is usually a bit of a line on the weekends, but it is well worth the wait (the wait is much shorter now that they have opened up more seating). Go inside and put your name on the list and then grab one of the local periodicals, find out what the haps are in the community, and get ready to enjoy a truly delightful dining experience.
