2:30pm | They came in the dead of night, these men with their lights and ropes and saws, charged with the singular mission of removing the Cupola of the old carousel (later Looffs Lite-A-Line) and deliver it intact to the city’s storage yard on the other side of town.
A light rain arrived along with the crane, which would separate the Cupola from the remaining salvageable steel beams and wood, which made up its body.
For this abandoned relic of the past, little more now than a daily distraction of a city’s altered vision, it was time to move on.
A condominium project, years in the waiting, had finally gotten clearance to begin construction and progress, left patiently waiting, would no longer be denied.
