Dan Nykolayko’s pooch Cherie is a celebrity of sorts in the local French bulldog community.  She’s a world-class surfer with 26,100 followers on her Instagram.

But Sunday morning she was just one of about two dozen members of So Cal’s French Beachdogs who held their monthly meet-up at Rosie’s Dog Beach in Long Beach.

Nykolayko joked that French bulldogs are superior to English bulldogs because they are in better shape. “They don’t get tired after running 10 feet.”

There were a couple bulldogs of the English variety at Rosie’s on Sunday, but a 50-yard stretch of the shoreline belonged to the Frenchies. Great Danes and labs and dobermans stayed clear.

The pet owners talked among themselves about keeping their pets healthy, in particular about the diet for their Frenchies and what’s going to be best for each dog’s delicate digestive system.

To be blunt, French bulldogs are known to fart.

A lot.

More than a lot.

“We’ve been gassed out of our home more than a few times,” said Nykolayko.

“We’ve considered buying gas masks,” joked Danny Penschonok. “Always, always roll down your window if you’re taking a French bulldog for a ride.”

All kidding aside, Penschonok would want no other kind of dog. “When we go for a walk, people are always stopping us and asking about the breed. They get a lot of attention.”

Most of the attention on Sunday went towards Gumbo, however.  Eric Bustillo’s French bulldog suffered a serious back injury.  Gumbo lost the use of his hind legs. Bustillo took Gumbo to the Veterinary Neurology Center in Tustin and the dog was fitted with  a pair of wheels.

Three of the Frenchies on the beach studied this strange bulldog when he arrived.

Gumbo ignored them and took off on a run along the shoreline, handily beating them in a 50-yard dash.
