rancho1Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site announced earlier this week that Adobe Days Revisited, an award-winning education program for fourth grade students, is seeking volunteers to help run the show for the nearly 6,000 youth who participate annually.

The program uses costumed docents who act as historic figures to bring the rancho’s rich and storied past to life. The national, state and Long Beach Historic Landmark preserves the rich history of Spanish, Mexican and American California.

Docents share stories and teach children about the Victorian-era chores and games. The program is designed to enhance classroom curricula and meet the state’s meticulous California History education standards, according to the announcement.

Volunteers are required to attend and complete a training program that is scheduled to run from 9:30AM to 12:30PM for eight Thursdays, starting on September 10. The Rancho’s Education Director, Meighan Maguire, Ph.D. will conduct the program, covering both the factual and performance aspects of Living History docenting.

Once training is complete, volunteers will be expected to participate in a school program once every two weeks; typically on Monday, Wednesday or Thursday mornings from September through June.

Those interested in throwing on a costume and delving into some local history, please call the Rancho at 562.206.2040 to RSVP for the class. For those interested in learning more before committing, a Volunteer Opportunities Meeting will be held on Thursday, September 3 at 4:00PM at the rancho.

Rancho Los Cerritos is located at 4600 Virginia Road in Long Beach.
