1:55pm | Monday, September 19, 2011 the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation’s “Big Rig Teaching Kitchen” kicks off its nine-week stay in Long Beach, CA.
Long Beach is the second community that will be visited by the truck over the next year in partnership with The California Endowment’s statewide Building Healthy Communities plan to improve employment opportunities, education, housing, neighborhood safety, unhealthy environmental conditions, access to healthy food, and ultimately create places where children are healthy, safe and ready to learn. The Jamie Oliver Food Foundation’s “Big Rig Teaching Kitchen” makes its second 9-week stop in Long Beach, CA. The arrival of the mobile kitchen coincides with the release of a study by Re-Thinking Greater Long Beach on obesity rates over time amongst 5th, 7th and 9th graders in the Long Beach Unified School District.
Building Healthy Communities: Long Beach is working alongside several community partners and organizations and collaborating with a variety of community leaders to engage local youth by supporting them to participate for free in JOFF’s short courses in basic home cooking skills and nutrition 101 aboard the food truck, featured on ABC’s Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution earlier this year.
The event is open to all ages and is part of a long term initiative to reduce childhood obesity rates in Central and West Long Beach. The “Big Rig Teaching Kitchen” will be at Long Beach City College, 1305 E Pacific Coast Hwy. For more information, please visit jamieoliver.com/foundation/
