New Life Beginnings (NLB), a Long Beach-based nonprofit organization, has been selected as the recipient of a restricted $30,000 grant from the Jenni Rivera Love Foundation to support “The Beginning,” a new shelter facility to serve local women and their children.
NLB was established in 1984 by two homemakers who saw the need to support the diverse population of homeless women and their children in the community.
The initial award has sparked a $50,000 challenge grant from an anonymous donor that will bring a total of $100,000 to the project if matched by local contributions.
“We are so excited for this news and thankful to the Trustees of the Jenni Rivera Love Foundation for believing in our mission to help women and their children in their time of need,” said Rebecca Younger, president of New Life Beginnings, in a statement. “Now we only need to raise $20,000 to receive this wonderful challenge grant to complete the project.”
According to the release, “The Beginning,” to depict a butterfly-shaped “B,” was named after Rivera’s signature symbol representing beauty, love and renewal. The foundation is dedicated to serving single mothers with children so they can achieve stability, independence and a higher quality of life.
“We are very happy to be able to help New Life Beginnings to make this program expansion possible and to serve additional women and their children from Long Beach,” said Jacqie Rivera Camos, president of the Jenni Rivera Love Foundation, in a statement. “Jenni grew up in Long Beach and we know that she would be so happy and proud that her foundation can make such a difference in the lives of those she loved most.”
The late singer, songwriter, actress and TV producer’s foundation is managed by her immediate family. The location for The Beginning’s site has been selected, while plans for facility upgrades and furnishings are complete and pending approval.
The date for the program opening and community celebration will be announced soon.
