The Downtown Long Beach Associates (DLBA) are bringing a little bit more than music to their next Live After 5 event on Thursday, November 12. While Long Beach-based mystic vaudeville band Sex! Money! Power! will perform that evening, it might be hard to wrap your head around the main performance.

DTLB will welcome Captain and Maybelle to town and jaw-droppingly watch an attempt to break the world record for heaviest sword swallow. Set to take place in the Promenade parking lot from 6:00PM to 10:00PM, the stunt is a facet of carnie Lucky John’s (aka John Domingue of Seal Beach) curated collection of freaks. Captain (pictured) will be taking on 60-pound kegs, provided by Beachwood BBQ & Brewing, who will fittingly be serving their Thrill Seeker IPA, attached to swords as they slide down his throat.

“I’ve dedicated the majority of my life to scouring the earth, searching for elite extreme performers to push the limits of human capacity,” said Lucky John in a statement. “The performers I gathered—Captain and Maybelle, having accepted the Thrill Seeker World Challenge—will be faced with extraordinary feats of danger and have to gather the utmost courage.”

Lucky John says that only a handful of performers have accepted his challenges and even fewer have succeeded.

Alongside Sex! Money! Power!, indie-folk outfit Leather Tramp and DJ Kristin Lush and her electronic circus band will take the stage to provide the theatrical music for the evening. Joining the music makers will be Jason Latex, balloon-manipulating expert, as well as fire dancers and stilt walkers.

“Last month’s Live After 5—where nearly two-thousand people came to Elm & Broadway to watch a reenactment of Nightmare Before Christmas—proved that theatrics and music combined is something locals are yearning for,” said Gina Dartt, special events & marketing manager for the DLBA, in a statement. “This is of no exception. We strive to bring the extraordinary to DTLB with each event and we are sure to succeed in making that happen on November 12.”

Live After 5, featuring the Thrill Seeker World Challenge, will take place at the Promenade Lot (located between Third Street and Broadway) on Thursday, November 12 from 6:00PM to 10:00PM. The event is free and open to all ages. For more information, click here.
