Recent Cal State Long Beach film grad Carla Dauden’s short film The Wash features two good-looking actors washing their cars, each one eyeing the other from across the driveway. It is beautifully shot and expertly edited, but it also has a message: wasting water isn’t sexy.

Earlier this week, that message was received as The Wash was named a winning entry in this year’s Intelligent Use of Water Film Competition. The annual competition, presented by the irrigation company Rain Bird, aims to empower filmmakers to create shorts that address the issue of water conservation in new and ingenious ways.

The hope is that new methods and ideas for responsible water use will be creatively displayed by the filmmakers and that the competition can serve as a platform to address the world’s current water challenges.

Dauden’s film was announced as one of six finalists last month and was awarded the Audience Choice Award after a Beverly Hills screening and voting session on Tuesday. The award comes with a $5000 prize and is seconded in status only by a $10000 Jury Award win, which went to a Brooklyn filmmaker and his short, Isla Urbana
