2:01pm | As Memorial Day nears, the city of Long Beach has announced that it will kick off its annual smorgasbord of summertime activities this Friday with a performance by DSB (Don’t Stop Believin’), a Journey tribute band.

The free concert will be held at Marina Vista Park on the corner of Colorado Street and Santiago Avenue this Friday, May 27, with activities for youth set to begin at 5 p.m. and the music at 6:30 p.m. Children will enjoy bounce houses, face-painting and family-friendly games. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs and picnic dinners to enjoy while relaxing on the lawn, city officials said.

The concert is the premier event of the city’s “100 Days of Summer” campaign, which offers residents hundreds of free and low-cost cultural enrichment programs, sports activities and special events citywide between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

During “100 Days of Summer,” Beachers are encouraged to stick around town, or, as the city puts it, “stay and play” in Long Beach.

“From concerts in the park to movies on the beach, there are many great events and activities happening right here in Long Beach for free,” Mayor Bob Foster said in a statement. “There’s no reason to leave town to find fun this summer as there is something for everyone to enjoy.”

A comprehensive list of offerings during the 2011 summertime campaign is available by visiting 100DaysofSummer.org.

Visitors to the website will find program listings for free concerts and movies, Long Beach Sea Festival Events, El Dorado Nature Center programs, Rancho Los Cerritos and Rancho Los Alamitos historic sites activities and ideas for spontaneous fun and adventure, including biking, golf, tennis, kayaking, swimming and free drop-in youth and teen programs at the city’s various parks, according to information provided by City Hall spokesman Ed Kamlan.

Additionally, more than 500 classes in the arts, sports, music and more are listed on the site.
