An evening of powerful musical extremes, Long Beach Symphony presents Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana” and Ana Lara’s “Angeles de Llama y Hielo” on Saturday, March 11, at the Terrace Theater.

Under the direction of Maestro Eckart Preu, Long Beach Symphony’s orchestra, with soloists Anna Schubert, Ashley Faatoalia and James M. Schaefer, plus choral performances from Long Beach Camerata Singers, South Bay Children’s Choir, and returning to Long Beach, the audience-favorite Silver-Garburg Piano Duo.

“Our world-class musicians, alongside three soloists, two choruses and a world-renowned piano duo make this a must-hear Long Beach Symphony classical concert,” Long Beach Symphony President Kelly Ruggirello said.

Orff’s “Carmina Burana,” which debuted in 1937, is the German composer’s most famous work. It’s a vivid and musically engrossing suite of works based on several medieval poems exploring the joys of the tavern, nature, love and lust.

Lara’s “Angeles de Llama y Hielo”—or “Angels of Fire and Ice”—ignites the stage with music by one of the most notable, versatile and respected Mexican composers of the modern age. Created in the early 1990s, the composition was inspired by the evocative poetry of her countryman Francisco Serrano. “Angeles de Llama y Hielo” is a meditative orchestral exploration of spirituality, encompassing the soul of symphony music.

“The combination of these two works by two talented composers provides audiences with a completely unique and captivating musical experience and speaks to the quality and diversity of our programming,” Ruggirello said.

The concert is part of the award-winning Long Beach Symphony’s 88th season.

Long Beach Symphony takes the stage at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 11, at the Long Beach Terrace Theater. Doors to the concert hall open at 6:30 for a 7 p.m. pre-concert talk that promises additional insights into the evening’s music. Individual concert tickets start at $32.
