Following the success of the Long Beach Folk Revival Festival‘s Folk & Bluegrass Jam session, the organizers have announced the event will now be happening monthly.

folk1The jam will be hosted the second Thursday of each month, beginning December 11, from 7:00PM to 10:00PM at the Red Leprechaun in Long Beach. It will be open for beginners and experiences pickers alike for a variety of folk styles, mainly focusing on Bluegrass music.

“The format is a traditional circle jam session as you might find at any of the popular Bluegrass sessions here in SoCal,” according to the Folk Revival Festival’s website. “We recognize that this format of playing is intimidating to the new-comer, so we have decided to do something a little different so we can help introduce a new generation of musicians to this format of playing music. To facilitate this we will be providing a listing of songs as well as basic chord charts for these songs on this page which many in the folk community consider to be ‘standards.’ These are for the novice who would like to get familiar with the music before attending the session. We understand this is not the typical way a new-comer would learn these songs, but it does help accelerate the interest by people who might not come otherwise.”

The featured artist at this Thursday’s jam session will be none other than local folk/Americana group Sawtooth, who—appropriately—came together at another open bluegrass jam which had been arranged on Meetup.com.
